On the easel ~ Cougar progress update

Moving along briskly now on the cougar painting. I decided to add another dimension by including branches and fall leaves. I have a lot of fine tuning to do before completion but feeling rather well about it's progress.

This painting is an 11" x 14" acrylic on Amperstand board.

A little progress report as promised. I've been painting primarily base coat on the newly added items. (view previous post for comparison) I painted in some missing details as well on the right hand side. The kelp is taking a lot longer to paint than I had thought. Right now the little otters look like bullets. I don't think I'll be happy until I paint those much needed details in to make them look real. THEN I can really get charged to wrap up all the loose details in the remaining kelp. This painting like others will take stages of development. After finishing up the otters, I need stop and add the sun light filtering through from above. Then I will proceed to the foreground kelp to wrap it up.

There is a LOT of real estate here to cover. This is a 24" x 36" painting. It always amazes me how some can zip through paintings this size. Though, perhaps they are more familiar with their subject matter. This is new territory for me. Those familiar with my work know. Because there is little reference material (like photographs), I'm having to just use recall and imagination to pull it together.

On the easel ~ Pacific Underwater painting progress

Don't all New Years start with a new promise? I'm not sure what adventures will unfold for the upcoming months. I'm an optimist myself and feel we make our own destiny.

My plan for this year is much like the years past; work harder, be more creative and pave a new path. (and be darn careful what you wish for, ha ha ha)

I'm back at work on my new Pacific underwater painting for the time being. This subject matter still proves to be a learning experience as I go.

As soon as I finish the kelp visible here in the photo, I'll be adding the underwater critters. I have no photo reference to study and work from. I've studied the critter and drawn it out according to observation. I think I have good understanding of the anatomy and her design function or movements through the water.

I should think it will take another several days to complete the kelp and I will add in the critters. (Yup, it's a surprise unless you've kept up with my travels and articles here.) I'll repost updates as time permits.

For all those I have not had the pleasure of chatting with, I wish you and yours a healthy, prosperous New Year!

Winter in the studio ~ On the easel

The cool winter temperatures are keeping the studio a bit chilly. Oil paintings back on the wall and on to a bit of acrylic painting for now.

On the easel now for a week or so is this cougar with miles to go. (so it seems) She is a beautiful cougar and I love painting her. She has a sweet face as cougars go.

I've started on the eyes which I find draws me into the painting process easier. Today I'll work my way down through the base coats from the mouth down to the base of the painting and back to the upper areas filling in the thickness of the hair and it's details.

The holidays are fast approaching. It's comes on way to fast for comfort given what I would like to accomplish before hand.

I've not painted a cat (my favorite) in some time. It's always a good thing to throw in a kitty to warm up the brushes and my heart.

Autumn and Winter in the Studio

Last year I started this painting of a male Elk. It's been hanging on my studio wall ever since set aside for other pressing work that needed to be completed.

Winter is a wonderful time to hunker down in the studio and catch up on all those such paintings.
It's a bit chilly out and rain is in the forecast.

This Male Elk making his presence known to all those willing gals is once again on the easel.
Yesterday I began by filling in all the rocks beneath his feet. Today much of that is still to wet to work on so I'll be painting in the legs and slowly working in the body.

In the image to the right you can see the rocks are roughed in. It will be a slow process tying all upper and lower levels of water together. Oil dries way to slow during the chilly winter months.

The Elk painting measures 22" x 28" and is on stretched canvas.

So far I'm still on my original design track. However, anything can change as I see something that can me made better as I move along.

As you can see the level of the water drops off the further back into the image. The water in the foreground will be shallow. I'll be leaving some of the rocks above the waters surface to enhance the look.

As mentioned above I'll be letting the work from yesterday dry while I begin work on his legs.

News, Updates and New Announcing new print releases.

The month of September was one of those rare but brilliant vacations of all time. One month at on the Southern California Coast.

Mornings often foggy burned off by mid afternoon in time for some sun and exploration. We ventured south along the coast for some kayaking and site seeing. We re-visited some of our favorite places like Coronado, La Jolla, Carlsbad and Cabrillo Beach just to name a few.

I'll be slowly posting in my other blog (Wildlife Art with Brenda D. Johnson, click tab right column) about these adventures and discoveries. The sunsets, ocean breezes and the many species of wildlife will be relived through my upcoming works. I have several in mind to create featuring shore life.

We've been back now for almost three weeks and working double paced getting ready for the next show this weekend at San Dimas Wildlife Art Festival. (check my main site for schedule and information)

I'd like to also announce a new print series of two small works. The image to the right titled: "Fierce Abbreviated" featuring a Saw Whet Owl and a new Owl painting titled: "Ranch Hand" a 5x7" acrylic on board. The original is available on the latter of the two mentioned and was the subject of my last post here.

On the easel ~ Saw Whet Owl

Work continues on the little Saw Whet Owl. It's very close to completion at this point. More shadows will be painted in beneath him adding more dimension to the overall piece. More fine tuning of the visible leg and talon.

I spent this morning prepping some small canvases. Each 6 x 6". I'll be taking these with me on my September adventure. (I can hear the sound of the waves as I type this) The drawing will go in on each this afternoon. (Surprises for the next show in October in San Dimas.)

It’s been a varied summer so far combining painting, field trip studies and a trip to Ohio for several weeks.

I’ve started more paintings than I think I’ll ever be able to complete

and had to set them aside for more pressing ones with deadlines.

The field trip (mentioned in the previous post) will be on my companion blog for those who are interested in the pacific underwater

piece. Of course, I’ve just returned from Ohio only Monday so

that adventure (and an interesting one) will be forthcoming as well.

There is approximately three weeks at the easel and off on yet another adventure. I’ll be spending some time at the beach with dual purpose,

both fun and reference photos.

My next show is in October and I’ll be finishing up some small works

for that venue. (check my main website calendar for dates).

There are several reference photos that look interesting for same; i.e. The Saw Whet Owl I’m in the process of painting now, and I was thinking of painting a beautiful swan. I have a dove in a nest in which the colors are amazing that I might squeeze in as well.

I’m missing my favorite subject cats ! It’s been some time since I painted one and feel an itch to do so. It’s often so hard to decide

which subject to paint. Too may options!

Here is the beginnings of the little owl. It’s a 5” x 7” acrylic on board.

Sea Otter ~ Aquarium of the Pacific ~ Time to study !

Probably the best thing about being a wildlife artist is the field work necessary to capture the best representation of the subjects or habitat being worked on. In my case, the recent work on my Pacific Underwater painting has come to a point were my reference is somewhat inadequate. So off I go again to gather those necessary refreshers on the subject; the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nersis).

Luckily the Aquarium of the Pacific offers up a very nice exhibit to observe and study this little darling of the sea.

A dear friend has offered to ride along and enjoy the day with me. She is an artist in her own right and loves nature and wildlife as much as me. I love my job! Great friends and wildlife go together very well. : )

The image I have posted here is of one tank among many at the aquarium. Rather sets the mood I think! I can't wait !

Pacific Underwater Scene... On the easel

My fascination with the ocean probably started when I was first introduced to Padre Island while living in Texas as a young child.
My parents took me to the beach often. I remember the Gulf Coast well.

Our family relocated to California around my 4th grade of school. I fell in love with the California coast line.

I've spent many a weekend and or weeks out on the ocean boating (including sailing) deep sea fishing, kayaking...... you name it.

Why I never chose to paint the ocean waters previously is beyond me because so far I've enjoyed every moment of the exploration and study required to do so!

This painting is the second of my adventures with painting the ocean.
I am in love with the lighting and cast shadows of underwater scenes. The light dancing on objects below the surface is fascinating to me.

I hope to capture that same feeling with this new painting! Of those
who know me also know, I love a good challenge when it comes to painting.

A dear friend and I will be venturing down to Long Beach Aquarium to study some specific species which will be included in this painting. Reference photos are difficult to get, so I'll be taking along sketch pad and pencil to capture a bit of anatomy for same.

Here in this photo, you can see a nice base coat starting to build and a sense of depth. I have a long way to go in completing this one. The left side will have more kelp as well but the critters must to drawn in first to achieve overall balance.

51st Annual Exhibition of the Society of Animal Artists

Pet Portrait commission ~ on the easel

The pet portrait commission is coming along nicely with still much to complete.

I'm concentrating on the grasses and ground at this time. Once the back ground has been painted in, I'll return to the kitty for some last details pulling it all together.

This portrait has been a lot of fun in that the client wanted a nature setting. This kitty spends most days out in and out of the woods surrounding the property and play hunting. (well, maybe not always, it is a cat)

I'll post the completed painting as time allows. Look for the updates in several weeks.

Pet Portrait, Domestic Cat

Several years ago, one of my Bobcat paintings made the cover of a hunting magazine. I can't believe people hunt them! Yikes! But, through that cover I met a lovely couple whom I've kept in contact with over several years now. I've been honored by a commission from them and their character of farm cat will be the subject of that piece.

Here I have the base coat in. There is lots of tid bits on the ground to paint in, grasses to complete ... and, of course the kitty. I'll post updates as time allows.

The size of this painting is a 9" x 12", acrylic on board. :)

I'm delighted to say this painting of the Barn Owl and Flying Squirrel is finally complete.

There are many design challenges that went along with its concept. I was determined to overcome them. I believe I have.

The branches basically tie these two subjects together. There are two parallel lines, upper and lower almost presenting two separate paintings. The "Z" created in the added branches help the eye flow through this piece.

The story here is one that is totally realistic in the wild. Lunch, dinner or otherwise, this Owl has found it's prey and must navigate the thick wooded area through many branches! It would be too realistic for most if this little flying squirrel did not escape this day! It's my story, so please find relief that the owl will have to find something else for his meal. He escaped!

The medium is acrylic painted on clayboard. The size is 12" W x 24" H.

On the easel now is a small cotton tail and Saw Whet Owl. I have a few days left to complete them. As they are smaller and less complicated, it should not be that difficult.

I have one commission to start up again next week. Clients can only be so patient, deadlines, shows or what! This commission is a fun piece. It depicts a cat snooping it's way the the weeds. Cats love to do this playing "the hunter". They are delightful to watch! I find great humor it it!

Caribbean Cruiser Wins "Excellence Award!" at Nature Works, Tulsa

There are a couple of noteworthy updates to share. March has started out quite nicely.

Caribbean Cruiser pictured to the left has won it's second award. This time an "Excellence Award" from the Nature Works show in Tulsa, OK. I'm very honored and excited.

A print release is upcoming in a few weeks. I'll be releasing 50 Signed - Numbered Limited Edition Giclee Canvas prints along with 7 Artists Proofs.

Check the website for updates and purchasing information on them. They can be ordered of course now prior to release. Simply contact the studio. If you have a special Anniversary date or Birthday date, that number edition might be available now. Feel free to check.

A second bit of news as well. I've been contacted my Kennedy Publishing. I have two images being included in the upcoming "Best of Wildlife" series. "Mountain Heir" and "Bull Market" will be featured in this hard cover book. I'll post more when the release date is firm.

I'm currently painting feverishly trying to complete a few paintings for upcoming due dates. I've started the Flying Squirrel piece again! I'm excited about getting back to this one. More back lit critters! There are several unfinished pieces on the wall in the studio. They stare at me as if to say, "come ON", get with it! Among them the Elk in the water, two juvenile bears and some Bobcats!!!!

Nature Works ~ Tulsa here I come!

Well, it's that time again. The packing and boxing making ready for another wonderful art show in Tulsa. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again and catching up on all that's new and making new friends (always an added bonus!).

I've put together some very different challenging paintings for this show. These new works are a push from my more recognizable subjects. The peacock shown in this update is one of the most difficult complex paintings I've done in some time. Literally every square inch is detailed with fine strokes defining each feather.

Red Fox

After working on several complex paintings a nice little 5" x 7" to sooth the soul.

This little Red Fox baby has it's song to sing. The sun will glow through that fist coat of fur brightly creating a lovely halo.

The day is broken up by appointments then back to the studio to finish this little guy and on to the next painting already drawn on to the canvas.

My husband wants me to paint a bison. So in his honor, one Yellowstone Bison.

I'm also working on a nice kitty for a dear lady friend in Kansas. It's a beautiful domestic cat with very unique markings and coloring. Though I have little time for commissions this time of the year. This painting should be a delight to do. I'm looking forward to it.

Red-Earred Slider ~ On the easel

Here is an update of the current turtle painting. At this point, I've managed the back ground, painted in the Turtles and working on the surface features of the water. Bubbles and green algae. A perfect addition to any thick pond or creek water. Yuk! ha ha ha!

Red-Earred Slider ~ On the easel

A few weeks ago, I started a group of Red Earred Turtles. Here I've just started filling in the basic base coat on the turtles and logs in this shot. This painting is an 8" x 18" vertical acrylic on canvas.

These and other fresh water turtles are extremely shy. First site of anyone getting a bit too close and off they plunk into the water.

I must have had literally dozens of shots deleted just showing a splash!

The Ohio River and it's creeks are full of Red-Earred Sliders, Snapping Turtles and one other type. This was my main source for observation. They love that thick green algae or muddy type water. The visibility in their preferred ponds and creeks is low. Sounds pretty gross to us but they are thriving here and are in abundance.

I've placed this group of five on a rather wide piece of Real Estate but often they would be tottering on the slenderest of branch soaking up the warmth of the sun. Anything sticking out of the water is fair game for sun worshiping. They are quit comical to me.

Peacock ~ On the easel...

Work continues on the Peacock today (probably will take several more days). I have about one third of the painting at the bottom to paint in. The beak needs some refining and added color as well.

It's hard to rush these colorful small feathers behind the neck. Each on is very unique to the other. One by one its character reveals itself as I inch my way through them.

I can't even imagine painting the whole bird with mating display in as fine a detail as I have attempted here! It might take 6 months at least!

I'll post more as it progresses. :-)

Peacock ~ On the easel...

Here is a little update on the progress of this Peacock painting I've inched my way through.

I've just started the feathers behind the neck. I thought the long plumes were going to be difficult, not so. I'm finding these short brilliantly colored ones to be quit interesting and complex.

I have about a third of this piece reasonably done. There are always that last bit of washes of color here and there. Given the long thin design of this painting I'll be particularly careful to use a slight color theory to pop shadows in such a way to draw the viewers eye up and around through the piece. I'm certainly not that far yet however.

I read a comment on Facebook written by a gentlemen in India. He seemed particularly interested in this piece as it is the National Bird of India.

Does that spark your curiosity? It does mine! I'll be doing a bit of research on that subject when time permits. This particular bird does seem appropriate as their national bird. I'll post what I find. It just might be an interesting read. I know it will be for me. Warm thoughts your way on this very chilly day on the mountain. :-)

Peacock ~ On the easel...

Happy New Year !

May all your dreams and wishes come true!

This has been an interesting year for us with all the usual. Health issues all behind us now, we are ready for a great year! I think I spared everyone the wild unexpected news. At the risk of sounding like a county western song, I'll spare you again. So lots of laughter, a wonderful break from the norm, it all came out quite well anyway!

I'm gearing up in the studio for my next show in Tulsa, OK., Nature Works. Plus, there are several other venues I'm interested in submitting to as well.

The image above is the beginning of a 6" x 24" cropped Peacock. It's very complex to say the least! I think I'll make friends with this painting AFTER I've completed it. Right now there is so much to do to complete it. I've mentioned this to others regarding this endeavor, "I'm so lost in the feathers!"

I'm working in Acrylic so it's pretty fast moving if I can stay on task. There are a lot of breaks required on this work. ha ha ha! Whew! Updates as I progress! :- )

Here is the latest update on my oil on canvas Elk Painting. Today I'm trying ever so hard to keep my focus. The Holiday is fast approaching and it seems more appropriate to bake cookies, plan for dinner quests and so forth.

I'll stay on task today and perhaps sneak out of the studio later for those cookies! The dough is in the refrigerator waiting to be rolled out and cut with cookie cutters. :- )

I'll be painting in the second layer on the antlers today. This layer will simply define the grooves and directional growth on them. As you can see, I've left a significant portion of the canvas vaguely defined with rocks. I prefer leaving the canvas somewhat clean in preparation for many layers of washes which will still reveal them. This technique is only used with water. I'll add more golden colors along with some dark shadows as these layers progress. Under the hooves, the Elk has kicked up some bottom sediment. The final few layers will reveal blue sky reflections and water movement.

This is a rather large painting. As stated in earlier post, 22" x 28". Seems small size to some, but for all the detail I try to paint in, it's HUGE!

Drying time makes for a slow process in this large piece. ( I've yet to find a happy resolve to painting water with acrylics which I have recently worked with) . A challenge for a later day... I'd say with the thin washes I apply at any given time, a couple of days sometimes more hanging on the wall is adequate.

When working strictly with oils, I might have as many as five paintings or so hanging on the wall between stages. These days since also working with acrylic, it's not a matter of staging a rotation of paintings dry enough to return to. I love that aspect of acrylic painting.

I'll post a new progress image after I have started on the fore ground. If anyone has any questions regarding my techniques, please feel free to post them. I'll answer as soon as I can. Of course, you can always email your questions for a speedier response.

7 Point Elk ~ On the easel

This drawing of a 7 point Male Elk was started some time ago. It was set aside to finish more pressing works due at that time. I've pulled the canvas out and started working on it again. It will probably take some time to finish. One, it's a 22" x 28" oil on canvas. Two speaking of oil there is the drying time in between the coats or washes and layers upon layers of hair and other details to add.

The background will be water. He will be standing in a river, shallow where he stands. Rocks will be visible beneath the surface.

I had chatted with a gentlemen last year who had really wanted me to paint in a background with a familiar area. Often paintings that evoke a memory are the ones people are more likely to purchase. He is right of course. However, I LOVE water and painting it. I've yet to paint water with these elements before so I'll just proceed for now with the original concept design.

I'd love to sell works of course, however there are particular things that draw me in and get me excited about a painting. In this piece of course the Elk is amazing but the water being challenging at best draws the enthusiasm even higher for me.

So it's back to the easel with an oil painting this time. I will post it's progress as soon as time allows.

Yellow-Rumped Warbler ~ Finalized

So simple, clean. Truly, it's difficult to leave well enough alone. Even now, I itch to put even more branches in, perhaps some leaves. But, I'll resist for now....... Keeping a painting simple is probably my biggest challenge.

I'm now starting the Eastern Grey Squirrel another 5" x 5" and..... this one I can paint away adding and adding branches and leaves. The squirrel is nestled within some branches giving him/her a protected feeling.

I'll post after I have a good start.

Yellow-Rumped Warbler ~ On the easel

Almost finalized. It's on to the third and most important phase of this painting. Adding the seedlings and additional branches adds another dimension for depth.

It looks like I'll be starting the Eastern Squirrel painting tomorrow.

I have a really cool little photo taken up around Denali of a little frisky guy precariously tottering on some thin branches. Lots of color in the leaves, etc. It should be fun.

I will post this finalized painting and work in progress on the squirrel as time permits.

Warbler ~ On the easel

This 5" x 5" acrylic on board of a Yellow-Rumped Warbler (Dendroica coronata) is in progress. I'm hoping to complete this
painting by Sunday.

The background was air brushed in. The subject and branch then
drawn and white paint applied to subject area. I like painting on a white background so as not to end up with a muddy flat looking subject.

Also, I find it takes less layering to cover the under paint and get on
with the details. Always the fun part...

This original will be available at the San Bernardino County Museum
Wildlife Art Festival (dates and times listed below).

If time permits, I will also start work on a 5" x 5" acrylic on board,
Eastern Grey Squirrel. :- )

Squawk Box Trio

For about seven years, my husband Jerry and I traveled to Lake Powell, Utah. We spent two weeks out on this river often hunkered down within an alcove protected by sun, storms and completely alone on our boat. I found these reference photos a few week ago. Boy, talk about a noisy bunch! I believe these were taken on the Navajo Nation during an excursion taking in the sites in and around Page, AZ.

It was nice revisiting the area through photos and the reliving the antics of this pesky three. Comes one 6" x 12" Acrylic on canvas titled "Squawk Box Trio".

San Bernardino County Museum "Art and the Natural World 28"

Only a few weeks away (painting time) the Wildlife Art Festival of the San Bernardino County Museum begins another weekend in celebration of Art and the Natural World.

My easel is full ! I have several pieces in different stages of completion. I thought I would try some Ravens for this show along with another Mini Hawksbill Turtle. I'll present two of these at the show.

The larger 14" x 18" Bobcat painting might be a challenge to complete. It's a full scene of rocks grasses with Mom and two kittens about 5 - 6 months of age. Bobcats are a little time consuming given their beautifully camouflaged fur of subtle variations of color along the back. With three of them almost full body to be painted and framed in three weeks..... well, you get the idea. I'll probably be burning some late hours!

Time permitting, I have several reference photos of ideas just in case time permits maybe one or two more 4" x 4" paintings.

Of those images I've included a swan and some ever so cute juvenile skunks being at the top of the list.

San Dimas Wildlife Art Festival has always been a fun show for me. It's a relaxing show to do and a short drive for many who come to see this event. It's always great to see so many familiar faces and catch up with the events in their lives. I'd like to thank all who were able to make it and stop by to say "Hello".

A special thanks to the event coordinators, directors and volunteers that make this show a joy to do!

I'm also honored to announce my painting, "Caribbean Cruiser" won the Silver Metal Award! It came as a huge surprise because I really was unsure of how an underwater painting would be received. I think it was a hit! And I'm delighted to say, it has a wonderful new home with The Smiths! Thank you!

Finally! Off the easel, this underwater Gulf Coast scene is ready for the upcoming 14th Annual San Dimas Wildlife Art Show. The show will take place October 15th to 17th at the historic Walker House.

The Belted Kingfisher ~

Finished for now, this acrylic on board will sit by the other finished pieces for the framer.

Size: 9" x 12" Simplicity is often my biggest challenge. I love all those lovely bits one finds in nature. Whether it be grains of sand or multitudes of pebbles, it's difficult to

ever be truly finished.

I love the clean contemporary look

a single subject can offer without it looking like a portrait. (my classical training often gets in the way here).

Recently, I noticed my interest in birds has grown to the point that while looking through the thousands of photo references, the most recent have been of Raptors. The enthusiasm is hard to curb. So, look for paintings of Raptors after my commitments are met. Why fight it right?

I'd love to hear comments on this piece as well as any questions you might have.

Kingfisher ~ On the easel

It's been a while since I've updated on work.

We've just returned from BC, Catalina Island, La Jolla and Oceanside. Lots of sun, snorkeling, kayaking fishing, and wildlife viewing!

When time permits, I'll update images and details of this trip. Check my other blog relating to wildlife images and travel. The Link is below on the right side. (might take several days to gather all the info.)

In this update "On the easel" is an acrylic on board started between the trip to BC and the Beach. I have a lot of detail left to complete both on the Kingfisher, branches, leaves and assorted lichens.

The inspiration for this painting came from the West side of Vancouver Island. She did not want to hang out while I watched her fish! However, I did capture a few nice shots to work with.

I'll be also uploading an image of another "On the easel" soon as well. I'm putting in the first base coat now. Something totally new for me! I'm attempting an underwater scene. Oh, we do get brave sometimes. I say that while laughing now, right? There is a lot of research involved in this painting. I'm really feeling a bit challenged at the moment, but....... determination and a really good sense of humor will get me through it. :- )

Great Horned Owl - Small Works

Great Horned Owl - I should have this piece finalized by the end of the day. I have one more 8" x 10" Barn Owl in fight I must finish before days end as well. I'll be spraying the final coat over five paintings in one sitting before weeks end then off to the framer.

For those not familiar with specifics on this bird I'll add this information:

Great Horned Owl: Bubo virginianus L. 22" Wing Span 44"
Wt. 3.1 lb. (1,400 g)

Range, North America with exception to some extreme northern reaches of Eastern Canada. As in other owls, females average browner and more heavily marked than males. Birds in the western interior region are generally pale and grayish in tone. Southwest population very pale and pacific populations are very dark.

They are found in wooded areas, mountain forest, desert canons, marches, city parks, and urban areas.

One of the earliest spring nesting birds, eggs may be laid in January or February through April. They will use abandoned stick nests of Herons or other Raptors, but will also nest in rock alcoves, tree hollows, building which are abandoned or even sometimes on the ground.
They usually lay 2-3 white eggs though sometimes up to 6. The young fledge from the nest at 45-55 days old and can live greater than 12 years.

They hunt at night generally but occasionally at daylight. They hunt by sound to get a fix on the prey. Their diet consists of squirrels, shrews, jackrabbits, mice, muskrats, skunks gophers, snakes and much much more! So, if you have a domestic cat, please beware! Snoockums could be the next tasty bit on this birds diet.

Great Horned Owl - On the easel

This little painting is one of two paintings I've been working on for the last several weeks. Plenty of interruptions, (life just does that). A little about my method or madness here. Firstly, it's an acrylic on Amperstand Claybord, 5" x 7". The background simply airbrushed in. The drawing over the top of the background then white paint over the subject area. I don't care to paint the animal in over color. The underneath color seems to wash out the colors on top. (to me flatten them.) This method is ever so different than working in oil. I like working with the wash of colors underneath to enhance the final outcome with oil. (Flemish, some my recognize as my classical training in oil here) I do think (time permitting) it would be interesting to try color washes that would read well. I love seeing paintings with lovely nuances of color showing through. However, they are generally painted in oil. Something indeed to think about. Warm or cool color on the other hand can be washed over the top of the final piece to "Pop or Drop" subject matter. That's a lot of fun!

I'll have to admit that I am not following my recent workshop teachings with Terry Isaac on this one. I really don't like working over mid tones. Or from dark to light. I'm often feeling as if I am working backwards with acrylic vs. oil.

Bobcat and Cubs

This is an awesome sight! Bobcat and four cubs!
It's apparent that she has had an excellent year so far to have so many. This family will return again and again to this site. The food source and water are there. The rocks and boulders offer privacy and protection to raise this liter. This is just one of many who have returned year after year since around 1992.

Many of my paintings of Bobcats have come from this location. Wild Bobs! Oh so cool !

I have started a drawing from this group of photo references. For balance in composition however, I have chosen Mother and two cubs. I'll be painting this one in acrylic. I might not start the painting for a month or two, but it goes without saying the passion is there and I am itching to start it.

I've had to put several I've started aside to date for deadlines. The 5" x 7" Great Horned Owl piece is almost finished. (I'll post it once complete) I'll begin this weekend on a 4" x 4" painting of a Saw Whet Owl. Then it's on for a new deadline.

I've ordered some books from Amazon.com and have a project that is very exciting. I'll need to research this subject matter completely before I even think about starting the painting. I'm thinking about doing an underwater scene, something I have never attempted before.

Jerry and I will be traveling a short distance to Catalina for Kayaking, Snorkeling and such. Underwater camera gear..... Hmmmmm! I love how the light rays dance through the water bouncing the most fascinating designs across whatever it hits. I think it would be wonderful to be able to paint the luminosity of light and abstract design. Always the challenges that keep this job fresh!

Today I'll finish the leaves and flowers in the foreground of the Grey Squirrel. I've yet to name this piece. Often names simply do not pop up in my head. Why is that?

Perhaps it's because I am so excited about creating a new painting today. I do like starting new paintings. There is an element of enthusiasm associated with a new creations! Of course I also have to pull off the vision in my head of it. The challenge is often that which drives me.

I'll pull out all the envelopes of photos compiled for each new concept and make the very difficult decision of which I should paint first. Wolves? Raptors? Skunks? More Owls?

The one thing I think I miss about oil painting is that I can start as many as I want because there is the "dry time" factor. It's truly a great excuse! With acrylic, I'm finding that's not necessary. But, I'm still starting one after another. I do love putting those ideas down in concrete and committing to them.

Domestic Cat ? Final painting

Completed "Jay" and now back to the Grey Squirrel.

I rarely paint flowers. Not sure why, I love flowers. The Squirrel will have Silver Dollar Flowers it it. My backyard is almost solid with them in early April through the end of May.

It's foggy this morning. The June gloom coming in from the beach fog has backed up and rolls over the mountains tops. I love when it begins to lighten up and the sun rays begin to glow through. I'll have my camera ready when and if it does today.

The fog is a good thing for me as I would much rather be outside taking reference photos.

I'm very much liking this acrylic. I think I've learned a lot by just keeping on task with it. "Jay" was painted on Amperstand Clayboard. I'm finding that the clayboard absorbs the paint too much. It's difficult obtaining crisp clean color. For my next endeavor, I will roller on a coat of gesso and see that eliminates this issue. The one thing I have noticed seeing other paintings in acrylic is that it does not have the luminosity and glow that can be achieved with oils. I have a goal to prove this does not have to be.

One more on the easel. This new piece is an acrylic on board. The background has been air brushed in and the cat is in the rough stage of base coat. The painting is an 8" x 10" in size. Generally, I do like to paint in the eyes first. Giving some life to a piece helps me feel the subject I'm working on. I'll post as this piece progresses.

Happy Memorial Weekend to all. I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather. Sunny California has certainly seen it's share of clouds and rain this spring.

Black Bear - On the easel.............

I've chosen these two bear cubs for an 9" x 12" oil on canvas. Here I'm just starting the base coat. After the base coat dries I will begin defining more detail in a second coat.

The reference for these juveniles were taken at a location in Idaho. I've produced a number of paintings from this trip. Who can resist babies!

It would be lovely to take another trip up that way.
Early to mid June is a great time to capture all the babies.

It was in Yellowstone that I captured some amazing baby photos of Elk, Moose...........

Of course, it's also a bit nerve racking to attempt to hike with all the Mothers in protective mode. I did little hiking that year!!!!!!! Grizzlies were out in numbers looking for easy marks making hiking simply out of the question for me.

I'll post the progress on this piece as it develops. Oh and again, I'd like to thank all of those who have emailed or posted comments. They are always a pleasure and welcome!

On the Easel..... Grey Squirrel in Silver Dollar Plants

Several years ago a virus plagued our community and almost wiped out an entire population of Grey Squirrel. Also effected were song birds, Mountain Banded Tailed Pigeons and who knows what else.

It's been at least two years since having the pleasure of watching these little comedians grace my deck and yard.

About a month ago, I saw one little one dashing up our street and head for the woods. I was delighted to see it. I'm hoping there is a mate somewhere close by and spring has brought us new little ones. I've not seen any since and the babies would certainly be out in full force by now. They breed a couple of times a year.

The photo references for this painting came from my backyard. I had hiked down to the yard for photos of the most amazing year in blooms from the Silver Dollar Plant. Lovely flowers in mass.

Of course, it was not uncommon to find my little friends there as well burying peanuts. They will do anything for a peanut! Hence the poses that day offered up by these little guys and gals. It was a great group of photos indeed.

The background on this piece was scumbled in and the med-ground painted in. I've yet to paint in the flowers. Updates as it progresses...............

Flying Squirrel ~ On the Easel........... cont............

Moving along slowly.......... still more work to do on his hair and other fine details.

Mustering the motivation to paint when spring is calling is most difficult. The view of the forest and birds at the two feeders reminds me I need to get outdoors! I need a hiking buddy for short excursions!! Rain again on Sunday and Monday........... so perhaps I can think about painting feverishly then right? lol, lol......... :- )

Flying Squirrel ~ On the Easel...........

Here's the update on the Barn Owl and Flying Squirrel painting.

I've spent a good portion of the day putting in tiny little hairs on the squirrel.

I hope to have this second layer completed so that it may dry enough to begin all over again next Tuesday.

In order for the hair to look real and thick, there will be many layers alternating color in this coat.

For those who have not seen one in person, their hair is much like a Chinchilla in feel and looks.

The last few nights, I have been able to hear them chirping in the woods behind the house. They bred in Feb. and I'm sure the kids are out with Mom learning all the skills they will need to survive out there.

Fortunately, I have not heard the owls as of late. The tree thinning pretty much frightened them off.
(Good for the squirrels, sad for me as I enjoy both)

Once he is looking real enough then back to the Barn Owl feathers....... Now that's a job!!!!!! :- )

Barn Owl, 9" x 12" Acrylic on Board

I love the coloration of the Barn Owl. Creating a glow around them is a lot easier than some species. I started this one some time back and had to stop, set it aside for other pieces. This painting is close to completion at this point. I'll finish up the details on the owl and move on to the branch that he is preparing to land on in the foreground. There will be several dead leaves hanging from the branches echoing or repeating the color of the owls back side feathers.

I've yet to name this painting at this point. I find thinking up names a giant task. Sometimes a name will come before the drawing is completed and other times, ....... a BLANK!

I'm already looking forward to starting another American Kestrel piece. The size is yet to be determined but close to 18" x 10 - 12 ". I have all the reference photos out and ready to go for the drawing. While looking through photographs taken at a local water fall, I discovered a picture of a rock slope with beautiful ferns attached to the side in cracks. Several rocks jet out offering up a lovely location for the Kestrel to land on but carefully. (perhaps to swoop in on a lizard should he be so lucky).

Then perhaps start another drawing of several wolves and will include water and reflexions. Several years ago while in The Rocky National Park in CO, I took some photos of a creek. There are a so many water ways there. This particular spot was so beautiful with dried grasses glowing and reflecting on the waters surface. I've seen many places in Yellowstone that looked a lot like this. (same flora and fauna too). I'm looking forward to painting more complex pieces with perhaps a story or two in them.

On the Easel..... Barn Owl and Flying Squirrel painting

I'm back to painting today in the studio having had a couple of days off.
It's time for the barn own and flying squirrel to come to life. I'll be working on them both before returning to the background and foreground in the painting.

The original idea and drawing included snow on the branches. I thought that the light color might bring more depth into the painting. I've obviously not completed that yet, but... the more I visualize the finished piece in my head the snow would indeed strengthen and add even more depth moving the branches forward and tie the whites in moving down the painting.

There are many design challenges in working outside the one third rule in a painting. I seem to like going beyond rules to challenge myself. It does create more work by going in this direction. What are rules anyway........ I tend to like breaking them...... Makes for a less boring time of life. Right? ..... ha ha ha!

I have back up on this philosophy!!!! My oldest son has a Masters in Fine Art and believes that if we artist always follow the rules, it stifles creativity! I can see his point so clearly! Though, I'm sure many would disagree.

Dire Wolves and Mammoths

My husband and I often watch the Science Channel and or Nat Geo in the evenings. A recent documentary on the discoveries made at the La Brea Tar Pits prompted a visit there last Sunday.

The number of preserved fossils and variety found in the Asphalt pits there is the largest in the world. A few to mention are Dire Wolf, Short-faced Bear, American Lion, Sabertoothed Cat among the Carnivores. Many Herbivores including, Columbian Mammoth, American Mastodon, Ground Sloths, Western Horse, Ancient bison, Dwarf Pronghorn, Extinct Camel.........(really!)

It's hard to imagine this ancient world standing on the grounds among all the high-rises, parking meters and cars honking! The Museum has done a remarkable job covering the Ecosystem, environment through the periods up to and including the ongoing excavations.

If you are anywhere near the Los Angeles area. We highly recommend a visit to the museum.

New Video and New on Facebook..........Plus, new paintings in the works

I'd like to thank all of the nice comments and for taking the time to "Rate" the new video and also the video released about 7 months ago. I really appreciate it. If anyone wants to "subscribe" please do so. You will receive updates when new videos come out if you Subscribe as well.

I have one new video in the works! This one will be a speed painting. (Yea, I asked what that was also, ha ha ha!)

Basically, it's a series of photographs taken during the process of completion. It will probably take a LOT of photos to produce this to make it work. I'll be curious to see just how many! The video can be accessed in the same location.

Also, now for all those Facebook users, I have started a new page there as well for updates and general information new paintings and such. While on Facebook, search: "Brenda D. So yes, new paintings........ Currently, I am working on several. (oil takes drying time so I might have as many as five going) I'm working on another Barn Owl, (this one in flight). The Kestrel is in the drawing stage. The reference for both birds are local scenes. I love the fact that I can step out my back door and photograph the trees for reference.

Red Fox

Happy New Year Everyone! I hope the last year provided some excellent memories for you and this year we are all able to create the most memorable ever! I wish all good health, and prosperity beyond your dreams!

I have a list above my drafting table of painting ideas and animals I'd like to paint. The list is often longer than time allows. (Isn't that the case with most of us....) I'll be painting more Raptors this year.

Several years ago I drew three Red Tailed Hawk chicks in a nest. I was going to include the female but ran into a creative block with her position and set the whole piece aside to work on other paintings in progress. This is a piece I'd really love to work out and complete. I'll probably start work again on it once all the "deadline" work is behind me. Ugh! don't you just love deadlines? ha ha ha!

The above painting is titled: "Vole Crazy". The image is small here but, there are flying bits of snow where this Red Fox is busily digging up one of his favorite niblets! Voles!As usual, I'd love to hear from you! I've received a lot of wonderful comments by email.

I'm feverishly finishing up things now for the San Bernardino County Museum Annual Wildlife Art Festival. Days are running out here for me as the show is just next weekend, the 21st and 22nd, November! The image here is an Acrylic 5" x 7" on board. This new medium continues to be a challenge for me given that all my classical training has been in Oil. However, I'm loving it!

I'm really excited about the new print releases for the show. The larger images will be available on canvas only. The Black Bear given the size (huge) will be offered up in two sizes. The smaller images will be available in either Paper or Canvas all Signed and Numbered Limited Edition.

Youtube slideshow - A New Adventure!

There is a new "Link" to Youtube at the bottom of the blog if you'd like to watch my newest adventure......... I Movie ! What a fun medium to explore.

This piece features misc. works from spans of work covering about 7 - 8 years. I'd love to venture on to more challenging video clips. Perhaps a "How To" video featuring a painting from start to finish. This would not only be challenging but also fun to produce.

It takes several months to complete some paintings. So this venture would be somewhat time consuming to film and edit.

Luckily, I have had lots of help with learning this program from friend and Photographer Michael Bates. He has produced some of the finest videos I've ever seen. What talent!

Black Bear - Tree Hugger

The Tree Hugger is coming along slowly.

Today I'll add in a branch pressed under

his arm and against his lower body.

This lower branch will serve to add

interest and balance to the lower

portion of the painting.

There are lots of little areas that

will be fine tuned after this addition.

Black Bear

This piece was started in March and despite nice weather, I've stayed on task. I'd love to go hiking!

The title of this painting is "The Tree Hugger". There is a lot of territory to detail out in this 24" X 36" painting. I'm working with oil too.

Since the weather is so much warmer it seems to be drying well between layers. It's a commissioned piece for a client.

However, I'm liking this one so much, I'm pretty sure I'll have it printed on canvas. Those that have seen it also agree, a print series is a must. I'll post a new photo when it's done. Love to hear your comments! B

Snow Leopard Study

Wild cats have the most fascinating look

on their faces at any given point.

It was 15 African and Asian Cats at a

resident I visited many years ago that

inspired me to take a major turn in

my art career. The fascination still holds

today. This study was painted using

Acrylic on 5" x 7" canvas.

Coyote ~ "Sizing Things Up"

It's been a while since I've updated all on what is new in paintings and prints. There are a lot of new images to add too!

This month I'll be adding lots of new prints to my main site encluding,

This coyote painting called "Sizing Things Up". Other images to look forward to is a new Cougar original (you know I can't get away from painting those!), the Cougar image is an oil on canvas 11 x14".

I am particularly proud of a large Moose piece, oil on canvas measuring 28 x 30". I have not commited to printing this one as yet but it's so tempting! I would reproduce it on canvas as well should I decide.

There is a nice new collection of Mini Prints on canvas in the works. i.e. Squirrel, Coyote, 2 wolf pieces, and a new Snow Leopard. That's a good start!

For those in the Tulsa area at the end of the month, I'll be attending "Nature Works". I'm looking forward to the show once more this year visiting with old friends and making new ones.

Barn Owl ~ New Canvas Print

The Original Painting titled: "Who's Who" has returned
from The Art of the Animal X l l l at the Bennington
Center for the Arts in Vermont. It was an honor to be
juried into the prestigious show.

I have had a great response from those who have seen it.
A new print release is expected to fulfill the requests for
same. The new print will be a canvas giclee sized at
12" x 24". If you'd like to order a print of this very Limited
Edition, please contract me to be put on the list.

It's been a very busy summer and zipped by faster than
a tornado! I hope everyone has had a great summer and
hope to hear many exciting tales soon.

My next show is in San Dimas in October. (Check the website

Many new works are in progress, including birds of various

Kestrel original ~ "Table For One"

June and it seems more like spring here on the mountain. Yesterday it was foggy with drizzle. Perfect day

to paint.

This fishing bear is in the works. I still have areas left and right to work on. The splashes will be more defined upon completion. The foreground water has some detailing to work on as well.

I've set this piece aside and will continue work on an American Kestral .............

I am often asked by artists how I prefer to work. I've shown my drafting table set up with all reference material ready to work. For larger paintings an easel is necessary of course. However a flat surface makes for more stability for the intense detail.

The sun has come out this morning which makes it difficult to sit still for all the painting

detail ahead. It's such a nice day for a hike!

Cougar Creek Gallery

Cougar Creek Gallery ~ Sky Forest, CA

This 1926 Log Cabin is now the new location of my Gallery. It was originally built as the Post Office for the Village of Sky Forest. It is indeed a challenge hanging art on the walls, however.... if there is a will, there of course is a way....

Besides a main room, there is a small one Antelope Kitchen, and a half bath adjoining my framing room and office. There are two decks front and back offering not only an excellent spot for the Musicians during Events, but.......also to paint outdoors.

The season here on the mountain has just started to gear up. The flowers are beginning to bloom. I look forward to old friends popping in and making new ones this year. Until then,

Coyote Painting ~"The Clever Opportunist"

This new 9 x 12" original painting (also available in print)

was inspired by the clan of Coyotes living in my area.

This clan is so well fed, the fur on them is thick and shiny.

Sadly this good health has been gained by neighbors who leave their kitties and small dogs out. Coyotes are not the

only danger to small pets living in the wooded Mountains.

I certainly cannot blame the clever coyote. His needs are

simple and honest.

"The Art of Contentment" - The beautiful and amazing Snow Leopard. This new oil on board painting is sized at 6" x 13.5". It is available in canvas print as well as the original. This new work will (as well as other cats) be presented at the upcoming Nature Works Show and Sale in Tulsa, OK on the 22nd of February.

This is from photo references taken of a wild

Bobcat in the High Desert in Southern

California. There have been as many as

six cats in this location at one time.

Rocky Mountain Landscape

This recently completed landscape measures

8" x 18", oil on canvas. There are some places

that just inspire some type of artist expression.

Being a wildlife artist, it was difficult not putting in at least some elk, deer or bear. I think the location of this scene needed the silence.

I named this painting "Rocky Mountain Serenity". There are few visitors to the park in October. The weather is generally unpredictable. There was a snow storm on it's way during this visit. I loved having few

people around. I felt a sense of wilderness without them.

August is a great month to paint water images!

At least if we can't actually be in the water we

can imagine it while painting.

Still working on the grizzly on the left. More

work on the splashing and water movements....

But................should present this next weekend

at "Art on the Lake" in Big Bear, California.

Wild Cats - Two paintings juried into Paint the Parks

I received great news today from

"Paint the Parks". "Mountain Heir"

was judged "Top 100". And the

painting called "Trails and Tails" judged

"Top 50" in the miniature division. Both

will be shipped off this month for that

show. I am truly honored! The tour

dates and locations will be posted on my

main site on the schedule page.

Raccoons, squirrels..............

Visitors abound.......

Last week, my dog Bids and I frightened a
visiting raccoon right up this Cedar tree which
stands beside our outside deck. There he
stayed until well after dark.

They generally like finding a safe place to
nap during the day. Often, it's a nice chair
with cushion three stories up on our deck.
(AND..........generally no predators bothering
them at this height) Tooooo cute not to share!

Cougars and Cubs

For those whom I have missed this month,

may I wish each and all a Happy New Year.

The drawing here depicts a Mountain Lion

and her new cubs high on a ridge. Huge

overhanging boulders serve to give some

protection to the little ones.

The painting is 24" x 30", oil on canvas.

It has been in the works for some time and

cubs have been added along with some

rearranging of rocks to create balance.

This painting should be complete by the

third week in Feb.

I was so engrossed in the work I did not take

photos of it's progress............. I will post the

finished painting once complete.
